fabric yo-yo flowers

This post will show you how to make these pretty yo-yo fabric flowers:

First, trace a circle on the back of your fabric. The bowl I used was 6 inches in diameter and it made a yo-yo flower that was just under 3 inches in diameter. (The rule is that it will be about half the size when you're done)

Cut out your circle. It doesn't have to be perfect.

With the back up the fabric still facing UP, fold over a bit of the edge & stitch around. (Tip use a large piece of thread, because you need one single piece to stitch around your circle.)

And keep going............

When you've stitched around the entire edge of the circle, flip it over, and grab both of the knots you tied with your thread...

And gently pull them both at the same time...........

And keep pulling until it looks like this:

Then when it's pulled tight, tie your two pieces of thread together and cut off any excess.

I used a glue gun to add a large button to the center:

And then sewed it on . That button is on there for good now!

Now you can add this, or a bunch of them, to your clothes, handbag, shoes, or make them into hair accessories. The possibilities are endless!!

braided fabric flowers

Here's a tutorial for a fun new take on the twisted fabric flowers!

I traced around the base of a bowl to make the size of circle I wanted on my piece of felt. Then I cut it out.

I took 3 long strips of fabric and tied a knot at one end. (You could sew them together if you prefer.)

I snipped off the excess above the knot. Braided the pieces a bit...

Then glued the knot into the center of my piece of felt. (I upbraided it to redo the braid a bit nicer before I took this photo. Sorry for any confusion.)

Then you braid, twist around, and glue when needed..........

And keep going until your piece of felt is covered.......

Then cut off any excess fabric and glue & tuck the end underneath the piece of felt. And it will look like this:

NOTE: If you want a more tidy look, cut your fabric instead of tearing it like I did.

I decided to glue a button with a piece of ribbon in the middle of mine so my finished product looks like this:

If you try this, leave me a link to your post in the comments below!

pink and orange wipes case

Here's a wipes case I made today. I plan on giving it to a friend who has 2 little girls. One was born a couple weeks before my little girl. I hope she like it!!

burp cloths

I decided to make some burp pads for the baby......

When my son was a baby I bought a bunch. It would cost between $6 & $7 for a package of 2. And in each package only one would have a fun pattern and the other would be white. The white ones don't stay white for very long.
So this time around I bought this fabric set from Walmart for $10. It had 5 different brown and pink patterns. Each piece made 2 burp pads. And I think they're pretty darn CUTE!

I also had some extra fabric, as well as receiving blankets from when my son was a baby that were practically new. So I made a bunch more......

birdie stuffed toy

This is another little thing I sewed for the baby's room. I had seen lots of the cute stuffed birds that people made on other blogs and I knew if we were having a girl that I would try making one, too!

Since I'm not big into sewing, I am happy that this little birdie is all done.

I spent about $3 on this fabric from Wal Mart:

I cut out the shapes, sewed them together and added the wings and beak. And added the stuffing of course.

I think she turned out pretty cute!

handmade owl stuffed toy

I used a cloth napkin (I had it in my craft stash since I bought it ages ago because I liked the pattern.) to make a stuffed animal toy. It was pretty easy to do. I sewed it all by hand, because at the time I didn't own my sewing machine yet.

I just cut the shapes I wanted out. Then sewed on it's eyes, then it's beak. Then I sewed it up, leaving a small opening to add then stuffing, then sewed the rest shut.

I think it turned out pretty cute...

Sewing is not my craft of choice, but I was pretty proud of myself for making this little guy...

It has a home in my daughter's room now.

cushion covers

I made these cushion covers for some of those small Ikea filler pillows:

I love this fabric and I think they turned out cute.

Instead of worrying about zippers or anything like that, I decided to make simple envelope-style covers.

My little guy loves them! :)

wipes case

A few weeks ago, a friend at church had the cutest little wipes container that she made. As I was admiring it, she told me just how easy it was to make. So I finally made my own! It was harder than I thought to find the right type of wipes container. I looked at a few places and even had my mom on the lookout for one, too. I was thrilled when I finally came across one last week. I bought some pretty fabric a week ago that was a remnant so it was only $3 for the big piece of it.

The only thing I needed that I didn't have was a glue gun. I know, I can't believe I didn't own one either! So I finally bought a cute pinkish purple one on Saturday! It will get a lot of use for my next projects as well!

So here is the finished product:

I made the little fabric yo-yo for the top & added a button to jazz it up a bit. I decided to sew in part of some fabric I already had for the middle strip on the top part.

Here's the bottom of the case:

It's now in the diaper bag along with this diaper clutch my cousin made me when Jason was born. (I made the little yo-yo flower to make it coordinate a bit with the wipes case.)

I found this tutorial online if you want to make one, too. I think I will try making a wipes case along with the diaper holder for baby gifts. I know a lot of ladies expecting babies this summer and fall!

headband embellishments

Now that I have a little girl, I've been making lots of cute embellishments to add to headbands/ hair clips......

Here is how the twisty fabric ones are made.

I trace around the lid from my son's vitamins to make the size of circle I want on a scrap piece of felt, then cut it out.

I tear a long piece of fabric that is just under 2 inches wide. If you want a more tidy looking flower, cut the fabric instead of tearing it.

Tie a knot at the end. Then glue into the center of the felt circle.

Twist the fabric piece and glue it down when needed.....

...and repeat.....

...keep on going.....

...until the piece of felt is covered.

Trim the unnecessary fabric off, then tuck it under and glue down.

Add a button or other embellishment if desired.

These are great to decorate headbands, hair elastics, clothing, bags, etc......! You can also add them onto bobby pins instead of the flowers I added onto these bobby pins that I made for my niece.

I bought the black and white elastic I've been making headbands out of from Fabricland. I can't remember the cost per metre, but it is really cheap. I bought 2 metres of it and that has been enough to make at least 6 headbands.
I also bough this set of 3 wide ones from Dollarama. I fold them in half them sew the edge so they aren't too wide for my daughter's head. They seem quite comfy on her little head and they stay in place pretty well, too!

Here's what an embellished one looks like after being sewn in half:

And here's my daughter modelling one I made with the regular elastic:
